25 June 2009, Dumgoyne: International sportspeople enjoyed a taste of Scotland’s famed hospitality, with a memorable Gala Dinner and prize presentations to celebrate the conclusion of the hugely successful 29th World Fly Fishing Championships, which took place around the Stirlingshire village of Drymen.
Sponsored by local distillery, Glengoyne, it was the first time the World Fly Fishing Champions has been held in the UK, with 27 teams and 177 international sportspeople taking part. Britain did exceptionally well, with the English team taking gold over all and Scotland securing a well-deserved third place. English team member, Iain Barr also received gold in the individual category.
Hosted by the event’s international organisers, Neil McCarry and Alberto Laidlaw and Glengoyne Distillery, the Gala Dinner Championship presentations were made by guests of honour, Richard Lochhead, MSP and FIPS-Mouche President, Paul Vekemans. As well as personalised bottles of Glengoyne Single Malt for the overall winners, each participant received and exclusive Limited Edition 10 Years Old bottle and tube marking the historic event.
The World Fly Fishing Championship showcased some of Scotland’s most famous and breathtaking fly fishing locations, including Lake of Menteith, Loch Leven, Loch Awe and Carron valley, as well as beats on the River Tay.
Glengoyne ‘The Real Taste of Malt’ is one of the leading premium malt whiskies in the world and has been distilled at Glengoyne distillery since 1833. It has recently released three new single cask malts in addition to the award-winning core range, which includes a single malt 10 Years Old, 12 Years Old cask strength, 17 Years Old and 21 Years Old.
