Latest Whisky News - GOLD for Glengoyne – second year in a row - 20th November, 2009
Dumgoyne, 20 November 2009: Judges of the internationally famed and highly respected Scottish Field Whisky Challenge (SFWC) surprised even themselves this year, by once again awarding Glengoyne 21 Years Old Highland Single Malt Whisky the top accolade of overall 2009 Distillery Bottling of the Year – for the second year in a row.
In an unprecedented turn of events, the experienced panel of judges, rigorously blind tasted 50 samples, split over three categories (under £30, £30-£75 and over £75), before awarding the overall top trophy of Distillery Bottling of the Year 2009 to Glengoyne 21 Years Old. The judges were especially impressed that Glengoyne once again came top of the leader board, despite competing against a new batch of nominees and scored by a panel featuring two new judges.
Describing Glengoyne 21 Years Old, Will Gardner, who oversaw the awards, commented: “The huge sherry experience that this Glengoyne delivers is simply sensational and undoubtedly the finest sherried whisky on the market. Wonderful.”
Glengoyne 21 Years Old, was also awarded joint gold in the category of £30-£75 with Strathisla 30 Years Old, selected over strong competition from 17 other whiskies in that category including Lagavulin 16 Years Old, Laphroaig 18 Years Old, Ardbeg Corryvreckan and AnCnoc 16 Years Old.
Iain Weir, Marketing Director for Ian Macleod Distillers, brand owners of Glengoyne commented: We are absolutely thrilled to have the Glengoyne 21 Years Old awarded this prestigious accolade. Since its re-launch in 2007, the class and quality of the 21 Years Old has been recognised in a number of awards. But to take the title of the SFWC Distillery Bottling of the Year for the second year in a row, against some great competitors, is a triumph for the team at the distillery and we are all proud of their achievement.”
Commenting on Glengoyne’s success, Archie McKenzie, editor of Scottish Field said: “It is this level of consistency which marks Glengoyne 21 Years Old a world class whisky and what makes the Scottish Field Whisky Challenge a barometer for quality whisky and a trusted guide for whisky fans around the world”.
Ian Macleod Distillers enjoyed further success in the SFWC with both Isle of Skye 8 Years Old Scotch Whisky being nominated in the best whisky under £30 and Smokehead 18 Years Old and Chieftain’s Springbank 40 in the category of over £75.
Selected for their knowledge and demanding, outspoken reputations, the judging panel included: Richard Joynson, proprietor of Loch Fyne Whiskies and Keeper of the Quaich; Keir Sword of Royal Mile Whiskies; Darren Leitch, Whisky Shop; Elaine Cruickshank, Gordon & MacPhail, Ronnie Routledge, Single Malts Direct, Regis Lemaitre of Regis Whisky Mad and Julie Trevisan Hunter, manager of The Scotch Malt Whisky Experience.
Glengoyne ‘The Real Taste of Malt’ is one of the leading premium malt whiskies in the world and has been distilled at Glengoyne distillery for over 175 years. The new single casks join the award-winning core range, which includes the Glengoyne Highland Single Malt 10 Years Old, 12 Years Old, a Cask Strength 12 Years Old, 17 Years Old, 21 Years Old and Vintage 1972.
